Ecotourism project launched at Ponmudi
Thiruvananthapuram Forest Development Agency, Department of Forests and Department
of Tourism together have launched an ecotourism project at Ponmudi in
January 2007.
They renovated the children’s park there are set up other facilities
such as rest room, cafeteria, toilets and parking area. The local
forest protection council (vanasamraksha samithi) is in
charge of maintenance of the services. About 120 local families are
members of this samithi.
Treks are to be offered to destinations such as Varayattumotta, Brymore,
Bonaccord and Chinnapullu. Some short tours will also be available for
students.
The Forest Department is operating another ecotourism downhill at
Kallar. While Ponmudi is 915 metres above the sea level, Kallar is less
than 300 metres above the sea level.
