Thirunelly, the pilgrim’s destination in Wayanad district of Kerala
This is a hill surrounded by valleys on the sides, and famous for the ancient Hindu temple there. Mountains rise from the valleys. The Brahmagiri Mountain and its sholas can be seen behind the temple when viewed from roadside entranc. Brahmagiri is the highest mountain peak in Wayanad.
A 10 km trek through the mountains will take you to Pakshipathalam, which is the habitat of many small birds and flora. Permission from the Wayanad Divisional Forest Officer is required for the trek.
Thirunnelly was probably an ancient town. But today, it is rustic village with large tribal population. Winding roads, dotted with bamboo groves, will take you to the place from Manathavady in Wayanad district. It is 64 km from Kalpetta via Manathavady.
Places of interest in the district include Pookot lake, Edackal caves, Karuva island, Bathery Jain Temple and Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary.
